According to the Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary of 1972, the term electronics is defined as “The science and technology of the conduction of electricity in a vacuum, a gas, or a semiconductor, and devices based thereon.”
While it is difficult to predict how old electronics are, in observance with the present times in the 21st century, the impact of electronics show significance in making the daily life easy and comfortable. Examples of developments in the electronics industry include: radios, televisions, electronic versions of newspapers, social networking sites, e-mail, e-commerce, and e-governance. All of these have their own contributions, and most are applied for entertainment and/or for the purpose of information dissemination.
In our daily lives, other electronic devices which are widely used are encompassing of vast applications i.e. computers, information technology, consumer electronics, healthcare, sensing, automotive applications, communication systems.
For early versions of electronic devices, the vacuum tube was used as the fundamental technology of the industry which was later on superseded by semiconductor components. Although the electronics industry consists of various areas, the semiconductor sector is the central driving force behind and of the entire industry.
Invented and pioneered in the United States shortly after World War II, semiconductors are used to fabricate electronic devices, and enable technology of the information age. Semiconductors are tiny electronic devices, usually smaller than a postage stamp, consisting of billions of components that store, move and process data. These functions are enabled through semiconducting materials such as silicon and germanium which provide data processing capabilities in millions of products (e.g., coffee pots, space vehicles), and allow precise control of the flow of electrical current.
Semiconductors (sometimes referred to as chip), in application, are used to run software applications (e.g., email, internet browsers, word/ spreadsheet processing programs). These also function as the brain with memory and data communication capabilities for various devices such as cellphones, gaming systems, aircraft, military equipment, and weapons. Hence, many products with roots in the mechanical system are heavily dependent on chip-based electronics.
The production of semiconductors involves a relatively extreme complex manufacturing process as it is small and densely packed with transistors. Fabrication of semiconductors consist of multiple steps to create integrated circuits, including microprocessors, memory, and microcontrollers. The entire process at an average last for six to eight weeks and is performed in fabrication plans that require clean rooms.
